Hate crime awareness

Increases in hate crime over the last few years have been mainly driven by improvements in crime recording by the police, although there have been spikes in hate crime following certain events, such as the EU Referendum, the terrorist attacks in 2017 and the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, hate crime referrals rose 62% over the summer of 2020 as intimidating behaviour from neighbours during lockdown prompted more people to seek support.
